Choose the right foods to remove chronic inflammation and stop the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS). Chronic inflammation wreaks havoc on the central nervous system causing damage and disabling symptoms. Such as balance issues, bladder troubles, numbness, tingling, and weakness.
Chronic inflammation is the cause of most diseases. Including cancer, heart disease, obesity, stroke, and autoimmune diseases. Unfortunately, most doctors won’t see chronic inflammation as a trigger to MS. They believe a patient’s body starts attacking itself for some unknown reason.
See details below for your free Quick Guide to Remove Inflammation.
There are several MS medications to slow the disease but they won’t stop MS. Plus, they come with awful side effects. Such as flu-like symptoms, viral disease of the brain, and even death. Neurologists often prescribe stronger medications to slow the progression of MS. But it comes with a higher risk of side effects.
A natural and safer choice is to look at your current lifestyle. Are you eating processed foods? Do you smoke? Do you live further away from the equator? Are you always stressed? The more inflammation you remove from your body, the less your body is fighting. Eating an anti-inflammatory diet that is mostly vegetables. It will help reduce inflammation and give your body a chance to heal.
Which MS Diet Is Best
There are many diets for MS making it hard to know which one is best. I started on the Swank diet back in 2004 but after several months I switched to the Best Bet Diet. After one year of starting the Swank diet, I stopped all medications.
My MS stopped progressing but I wanted my symptoms to reverse. After several years I switched to the Paleo diet and then The Wahls Protocol. I was expecting my symptoms to fully reverse. But the only thing that changed was I started to sweat more and I lost too much weight.
Then I realized I was also dealing with Candida, a yeast overgrowth. Once I tweaked the Wahls Protocol to fit MY needs, my symptoms began to reverse. This is the most important part of eating an anti-inflammatory diet – eat what your body needs.
Everybody is different so what works for me may not be what works for you. Some people need to eat less meat and others more.
I’ve also discovered eating too much of a good thing is bad. When I first started eating a Paleo diet, I kept reading how good coconut oil and coconut milk were for you. Coconut is saturated fat and is considered “bad.” But it’s rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). These are good “short” chain saturated fats, unlike long-chain saturated fats.
So I started eating lots of coconut oil and full-fat coconut milk. My body care products like shampoo and soap had coconut oil in it. Plus, I was taking antifungals that had caprylic acid (coconut). And guess what happened – I became sensitive to coconut.
It’s important to get a wide variety of food to get as many nutrients as possible. It’s also important to eat a wide variety of healthy fats. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way.

How to Choose Good Fats
For decades we believed all fats were bad. Everything is fat-free or low-fat but our body needs some fats. Healthy fats are good for the brain, heart, immune system, and joints. Fats such as trans fats, refined oils, and manmade fats are unhealthy.
Healthy fats:
- Avocados and oil
- Coconut milk and oil
- Fatty fish (mackerel, rainbow trout, salmon, sardines)
- Ghee (clarified butter)
- Grass-fed animal fats
- Grass-fed butter (unless you’re avoiding all dairy)
- Olive oil
- Nut butter and oils (peanuts are a legume)
- Palm oil
- Seed oils (flaxseed, sesame, etc.)
Avoid canola oil since it’s a genetically modified organism (GMO).
Anti-inflammatory Foods to Eat to Remove Chronic Inflammation
Changing from the standard American diet (SAD) to an anti-inflammatory diet doesn’t have to be hard. Avoid processed foods, refined sugar, and ingredients you don’t recognize.
Eat mostly vegetables and food with real ingredients:
- Vegetables
- Fruit
- Grass-fed meats
- Pasture-raised poultry
- Wild-caught fish
- Healthy fats
- Nuts and Seeds
- Healthy fats
Example menu ideas:
Breakfast:
- A bowl of berries
- Melons such as cantaloupe or honeydew
- Smoothie with dark leafy greens and fruit
Lunch:
- Leftovers from the night before
- Salad with many different vegetables and herbs
- Soup with vegetables and bone broth
Snack:
- Fruit (berries are best since they are lower in sugar)
- Nuts
- Veggies (avocado, broccoli, celery, cucumber, jicama)
Dinner:
- Mostly vegetables
- Protein such as grass-fed meat, pasture-raised poultry, or wild-caught fish
Dessert:
This is where you need to be careful. Typical desserts have sugar in them which is highly addictive. Sugar, even natural sugars feed infections like bacteria, Candida, mycotoxins, and parasites. It’s best to avoid having a dessert every day and save it for special occasions only.
However, don’t deprive yourself of a healthy dessert altogether or you’ll make it too hard on yourself and you’ll “cheat.” To break your sugar addiction decrease the number of carbohydrates you eat each day. I never ate a lot of sugary treats like candy or cookies. But, I ate way too many fruits.
Today, I don’t eat a lot of foods that are high in carbohydrates and it’s funny what I now consider a sugary treat. For me it’s a sweet potato, or 1/4 cup of berries, or an 8-ounce glass of carrot juice, that’s my candy. – haha
