Your immune system works to attack foreign invaders. Such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Unfortunately, something happened with your immune system that led to multiple sclerosis (MS). If you were to do an internet search on how to reverse MS you would find “the cause of MS is unknown,” this isn’t necessarily true.
Researchers have many studies showing exactly what causes MS. Do a deeper search and you will find many scientific studies pointing to common triggers. Below are some statements from a few different studies (you can find links to these studies at the bottom of this post):
“the cause of MS is multifactorial and include genetic predisposition together with environmental factors such as exposure to infectious agents, vitamin deficiencies, and smoking. These agents can trigger a cascade of events in the immune system which lead to neuronal cell death accompanied by nerve demyelination and neuronal dysfunction.” – PubMed
“Nutrition is considered to be a possible factor in the pathogenesis of the neurological disease multiple sclerosis (MS). Nutrition intervention studies suggest that diet may be considered as a complementary treatment to control the progression of the disease.” – PubMed
“Multiple sclerosis incidence and disease course are clearly influenced by environmental factors… diet in MS date back many years.” – PubMed
“This study supports a strong and significant association between dietary habits and MS outcomes, in particular quality of life and level of disability. A higher intake of fruit and vegetables and healthy fat intake appear to be important dietary factors.” – PubMed
Unfortunately, conventional doctors aren’t trained in nutrition. So this information doesn’t get passed on to you. Diet is not the only trigger, environmental triggers such as an infection or a toxin can also lead to MS.
Getting Help to Stop or Reverse MS
I found conventional doctors not helpful for treating my MS. They want me on one of the disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) but drugs made me worse. When I mentioned using food as my medicine my doctor said “Diet doesn’t work.”
“Conventional therapies for MS are based on the use of anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory drugs, but these treatments are not able to stop the destruction of nerve tissue.” – PubMed
I’m not against conventional doctors. But for my MS I don’t visit a conventional doctor or a neurologist because they treat all patients the same. Instead, I visit a functional medicine doctor who treats each patient individually. Functional medicine addresses the underlying cause of diseases. They address the root cause, rather than the symptoms. MS is not caused by one condition, many different causes can trigger MS.

Possible triggers to MS:
- Diet (processed foods, refined sugar, refined carbs, food allergies, etc.)
- Infections (bacterial overgrowth, parasites, viruses, and yeast overgrowth)
- Environmental Toxins (heavy metals, mold, pesticides, etc.)
- Chronic Stress (especially emotional stress)
- Hormones (cortisol, insulin, vitamin D – yes, it’s a hormone)
- Genetics (You can’t change your genes but you can change your gene expression by living a healthy lifestyle)
The Costs of Treating MS
Getting professional help whether it’s through pharmaceuticals or functional medicine providers gets expensive. I have spent thousands of dollars trying to reverse my MS. Not everybody can afford to spend this kind of money.
This is why I decided to start my website, MS Wellness Route, to help spread the word and help you stop and reverse MS. I have many articles you can read to help stop the progress of MS. You could even reverse some or all your symptoms.
I give the information away for free to help my fellow MSers like you. The information on this blog not only benefits people with MS but also any autoimmune disease. It also helps with weight loss, heart disease, depression, cancer, or any health condition.
I try to make my blog easy to follow and you can find different sections in the menu right under the logo at the top. There’s also a search bar on the side with a cute little dog where you can enter specific words you’re looking for such as “diet.”
I even have a weekly newsletter anyone is welcome to join. It doesn’t cost any money and I give extra tips that I don’t include on my blog. By subscribing to my newsletter you will have the privilege of getting into my wellness library. It’s full of MANY printables such as a “Gut Health Tracker” you can print out for your wellness journey.

Sometimes due to brain fog, it’s hard to focus on what you are looking for. I decided to write this post to help categorize the steps needed to reverse MS. Below you can find articles on diet, gut health, infections, removing toxins, and stress.
Which diet is best for MS?
There are many diets for MS including Paleolithic (Paleo), OMS Recovery, Swank, Healing Multiple Sclerosis, or the Best Bet Diet. You can get the Best Bet Diet cookbook free at Ashton Embry’s website Direct-MS. Each diet is different although they each have something in common. That is… lowering inflammation in the body.
I’ve been on many different diets looking for the one that works. What I found is – there is no perfect diet. Since everyone’s MS is different, each diet will be different. It is best to start an anti-inflammatory diet and alter it to fit YOUR needs. Listen to your body and work with it. Try an elimination diet to remove foods you are sensitive to.
Since there are many diets for MS to choose from you need to find what works best for you. Choose one such as The Wahls Protocol which is a paleo-based diet, the author, Dr. Terry Wahls, used this protocol to reverse her MS.
Here are some articles to help you to start eating healthy:
Gut Health and MS
Researchers found people with MS have more bad bacteria in their gut than healthy people. In other words, they are missing the good bacteria. The question is – Why?
This is probably due to a leaky gut. Having MS means you also have a leaky gut. Having a leaky gut invites infections and toxins to pass through the gut lining. My leaky gut was due to too many rounds of antibiotics and eating a poor diet.
Having a leaky gut also means you’re not absorbing nutrients so you end up missing important vitamins and minerals. Most people don’t eat enough fiber, so make sure you’re eating enough fiber every day, it will help with your digestive system.
It’s EXTREMELY important to work on healing your leaky gut:

Infections Leading to MS
Finding hidden infections is a little harder, you may need to find a functional medicine doctor for help. However, there is a lot of studies connecting yeast overgrowth (candida) with MS. You could also have heavy metal toxicity, mold, parasites, or Lyme disease.
Your body can’t fully heal until you get these hidden infections under control. You may even have more than one infection. I had to deal with a high level of mercury, candida, mycotoxins, and histamine intolerance.

Removing Toxins
Toxins are everywhere, they are in your food, air, water, body care products, or cleaning products. Chemical toxins are in your furniture, bedding, paint, and cookware. It’s impossible to remove every toxin but the more you remove the less your body has to deal with.
Choose organic as much as possible, if you can’t afford organic fruits and vegetables avoid the ones that are high in pesticides. Check out the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Dirty Dozen list for produce high in pesticides. Use clean body care products, again check out EWG’s “Skin Deep” to find clean products. Buy or make your own “green” household products. To keep from feeling overwhelmed start with what’s easy for you, such as using a water filter.

Multiple Sclerosis and Stress
Stress plays a huge factor in MS. It is very likely stress was the “last straw” before your diagnosis. Stress also causes flares so it’s important to learn to get stress under control.

The Best Articles to Read on How to Reverse MS
I hope you find this list to be helpful. You also need to work on getting enough sleep and exercise, exercise is an anti-inflammatory so it’s important to include it every day. Plus, get your vitamin D level checked, most people with MS have a deficiency in this important vitamin.
