Soothe muscle spasms and improve circulation with this DIY Spasticity-Relief Salve. Made with comfrey, calendula, and ginger, this natural remedy helps relax stiff muscles.

If muscle stiffness, spasms, or poor circulation are getting in the way of your daily life, this homemade Spasticity-Relief Salve may help. Made with a blend of circulation-boosting, nerve-soothing, and muscle-relaxing herbs, this easy-to-make salve absorbs deep into the skin, helping to ease tension, reduce inflammation, and promote better mobility.
Whether you have MS, muscle cramps, or general stiffness, this natural remedy provides targeted relief without synthetic ingredients.
Why These Ingredients Work

This salve combines anti-inflammatory and circulation-supporting herbs to help relieve muscle tightness, nerve pain, and spasms.
You can customize this salve by using any carrier oil you prefer. I used sweet almond oil because it’s lightweight, non-greasy, and absorbs deeply into the skin, making it ideal for delivering the herbal benefits straight to the muscles. However, you can also use olive oil, jojoba oil, or coconut oil based on your preference.
For essential oils, I chose lavender because it’s calming to the skin and helps relax muscle tension, but you can swap it for peppermint (cooling relief), eucalyptus (invigorating circulation), or rosemary (anti-inflammatory support).
Lastly, vitamin E oil helps extend the shelf life of the salve while nourishing the skin, ensuring your homemade remedy stays fresh for months.
- Comfrey Leaves – Supports muscle relaxation and promotes tissue repair.
- Calendula Flowers – Naturally anti-inflammatory, soothes irritated or tense muscles.
- St. John’s Wort – Helps with nerve pain and muscle spasms.
- Ginger Root – Improves circulation and helps ease stiffness.
- Sweet Almond Oil – A light, deeply penetrating oil that helps carry herbs deep into the muscles.
- Beeswax – Gives the salve a smooth, spreadable texture.
- Cayenne Powder (optional) – Stimulates circulation and relieves stiffness.
- Lavender Essential Oil – Reduces muscle tension, calms spasms, and soothes the skin.
- Vitamin E Oil – Helps preserve the salve while nourishing the skin.
I used a 2-ounce amber glass jar because the dark color helps protect the salve from light, preserving its potency. These are the amber glass jars I use: Keketin 2 oz Amber Glass Jars.
How to Use
- Apply to stiff or spastic muscles 2-3 times per day.
- For deeper relief, use after a warm compress or bath.
- Store in a cool, dark place for up to 12 months.
This all-natural salve is a simple yet powerful way to support circulation and muscle relaxation, without relying on chemicals or synthetic ingredients.

Spasticity-Relief Salve
Equipment
- Cheesecloth (or fine mesh strainer) – for straining the infused oil
- Glass jars (8-ounce for infusion, 2-ounce or 4-ounce for storing salve) – for oil infusion and salve storage
- Double boiler (or a heatproof jar placed in a pot with simmering water) – for melting the beeswax with infused oil
- Measuring spoons
- Measuring cup for liquid ingredients
- Stirring utensil (small whisk or spoon) – for mixing the salve
- Lid labels or masking tape to date and label the finished salve
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons dried comfrey leaves
- 2 tablespoons dried calendula flowers
- 1 tablespoon dried St. John’s Wort
- 1 teaspoon dried ginger root or powder
- ½ cup sweet almond oil
- 1 tablespoon beeswax
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne powder optional
- 10 drops lavender essential oil
- 4-6 drops vitamin E oil
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Equipment
- Sanitize your jars – Wash with hot, soapy water, rinse, and dry completely. To further sanitize, place the jar in boiling water for 5 minutes or wipe with rubbing alcohol and let air dry.
Step 2: Infuse the Oil
- Add comfrey, calendula, St. John’s Wort, and ginger to a clean glass jar (at least 8 ounces).
- Pour ½ cup sweet almond oil over the herbs, ensuring they are fully submerged.
- Cover the jar with a lid and store in a cool, dark place for 4-6 weeks, shaking gently every few days.
- Quick Infusion Method: If short on time, place the jar in a double boiler on low heat for 3-4 hours instead. If you don’t have a double boiler, place the jar in a pot with 1-2 inches of simmering water, ensuring water doesn’t get inside the jar.
Step 3: Strain the Oil
- After the infusion period, strain the oil using cheesecloth or a fine strainer, squeezing out as much oil as possible.
- Discard the used herbs and transfer the infused oil to a clean glass container.
Step 4: Make the Salve
- In a double boiler (or a heatproof jar placed in a pot with hot water), melt the beeswax with the infused oil over low heat, stirring occasionally.
- Once fully melted, remove from heat and stir in the cayenne powder (if using), lavender essential oil, and vitamin E oil.
- Pour the liquid salve into two (2) 2-ounce amber jars or one (1) 4-ounce jar.
- Let it cool and solidify before sealing the jars.
Step 5: Label and Store
- Once cooled, cover with a lid, label with the date, and store in a cool, dark place.
How to Use
- Apply a thin layer to stiff or spastic muscles 2-3 times per day.
- For deeper relief, apply after a warm compress or bath.
- Store for up to 12 months.
