In 2004, I had the worst multiple sclerosis (MS) attack I ever had. The left side of my face was paralyzed. I also had double vision, an extremely numb mouth, and slurred speech. It felt like someone’s hand was constantly on my head. It felt like my teeth were floating around in my mouth and I was so dizzy I couldn’t walk.
Unfortunately, my neurologist couldn’t see me until the following week. I was so depressed, I laid on the sofa thinking my life was over. These are signs of a stroke. I was so sick and tired of the MS drugs making me worse, I knew there had to be something better.
After a few weeks, I started searching on the internet (with one eye closed). That’s when I discovered the story of Roger MacDougall. He was a famous playwright during the 1950s, he was also diagnosed with MS at that time. Back then there weren’t any medications or much hope. Within a few years, he became significantly disabled and ended up in a wheelchair.
Instead of accepting his diagnosis, Roger decided to use food as his medicine! He started eating like our ancestors using the “Hunter-Gatherer” diet which is now known as the Paleo diet. Removing foods that HIS body reacted to it allowed his body to recover. Roger went from being in a wheelchair to walking and running up and down the stairs again. I’ve included the five steps needed to reverse MS naturally at the bottom of this post.
This was back in the 1950’s. Before the internet! Before MS medications! Before there was hope of recovering from MS! Now, there are MANY stories of people getting their MS into remission by using food as their medicine.
Holistic Approach
Pharmaceutical medications DON’T stop MS. If they work, they only work by slowing the disease process. Neurologists push pharmaceuticals and most of them don’t tell you about diet. My doctor even had the nerve to tell me “Diet doesn’t work.” Well… it’s a good thing I didn’t listen to him!
Using a holistic approach, diet, and a clean lifestyle, you can stop the progression. Not only that, you can also reverse some if not all of your symptoms. Some people think “holistic” is some kind of hippie movement. It’s not. Holistic means treating the body as a whole, not just the symptoms.
First, you need to stop eating foods that cause inflammation. Foods like gluten/grains, dairy, legumes (beans, peanuts, soy), sugar, and processed foods. The processed foods we buy in the grocery stores are NOT NATURAL. Plus, sugar has many different names making it easier to hide in MANY processed foods. Remove all foods your body reacts badly to, such as eggs, nightshades, or tree nuts.
Instead, eat foods that are anti-inflammatory, high in antioxidants, nutrient-dense, and fermented foods. These foods are healing and allow your body to thrive. More than likely, they are probably missing from your current diet.
Researchers discovered people with MS have higher levels of two bacteria causing inflammation. And lower levels of one bacteria that fights inflammation. In other words, people with MS are missing good bacteria in their gut. Start eating fermented foods with good bacteria EVERY DAY.
The Wahls Protocol
No two people are alike so no ONE diet will fit everyone’s needs. Even Dr. Terry Wahls did this with her protocol. It is a basic paleo-based diet she changed to be more nutrient-dense which worked perfectly for her. Her book provides a step-by-step guide to eating a healthy nutrient-dense diet.
Including:
- Vegetables
- Fruits
- Healthy fats
- Proteins, grass-fed or pasture-raised meats, and organ meats
- Omega 3 fish
- Seeds and nuts
- Seaweed/algae
- Fermented foods
Many people have benefited from following her protocol and you may be one of them. However, don’t get discouraged if you are not seeing the results you were hoping for. I was one of those people since I was already following a strict Paleo diet I didn’t see any new improvements. And, yes I was very discouraged.
Find Your Perfect Diet
Even though the Wahls Protocol did not work for me, I did not give up on it. Instead, I started looking into my medical history, even before MS. This is when I realized I had taken way too many rounds of antibiotics starting as a toddler.
Before changing my diet, I ate processed foods. I also craved carbohydrates (sugar), ate very few vegetables, and ate ZERO fermented foods. My gut was missing the good bacteria which led to a chronic yeast overgrowth called Candida. Many people with MS also have Candida overgrowth without realizing it.
Do you crave carbohydrates or sugar? Have you taken many rounds of antibiotics? Do you have lots of stress in your life? How about nail fungus, yeast infections, or UTIs? Then you probably have Candida overgrowth in your system.
In order to get Candida under control, you need to cut WAY back on sugar AND take antifungals. This is when my MS symptoms began to reverse. Three months after I started I realized my heat intolerance was gone! It is still gone today along with the numbness in the back of my mouth, heavy boot sensation on my feet, and more.
Since everyone is different you may see improvements right away or it may take longer. But a slow improvement is always better than getting worse. I’m still working on the numbness in the front of my mouth and the numbness in my feet. Both are feeling better since I significantly lowered my carb intake (Candida diet). Plus, I’m working on improving my walking thanks to The MS Gym.

One Step at a Time
After my major attack, I was desperate so I decided to change my diet all at once. That was one week before Thanksgiving! It was very hard and depressing watching everyone enjoying their huge Thanksgiving meal. While I had very little on my plate. I don’t recommend this route for you, I do recommend taking one step at a time.
Start by removing gluten first then dairy. Or the other way around, just start. Try an elimination diet to find hidden food sensitivities. This is how I realized I was sensitive to nightshades. Then remove toxins in your home. Start using natural body care products, then natural household cleaners. Add water filters to your faucets and air filters.
Before you know it, you’ve made some great progress. You should start feeling better (more energy, less brain fog, not as depressed). If not you may need to go a little deeper. Could there be an infection, parasites, chronic stress, or sleep problems? You need to take care of all of these.
Triggers to MS:
→ Diet (processed foods, refined sugar, refined carbs, food allergies, etc.)
→ Infections (Candida, viruses, bacteria, and parasites)
→ Environmental Toxins (heavy metals, mold, pesticides, plastics, etc.)
→ Chronic Stress

Staying Positive
Staying positive is one of the best things you can do for your spirit and your body’s healing process. If you are always thinking negative thoughts you begin to believe them. Instead, believe you will heal. Believe you can stop MS from progressing.
Stop listening to negative people, they are toxic and will only hold you back. I had a friend diagnosed with MS after I was. She immediately had no hope and accepted her future was doomed with MS. I tried to get her to change her diet and lifestyle. But she would only do what her neurologist told her to do (we had the same neurologist).
Within five years she was in a wheelchair. She eventually became a quadriplegic and died from complications of MS. It was very sad watching MS ravage her body and destroy her life. But she listened to the toxic negative people and believed she had no hope. Don’t let this happen to you.
Everyone has struggles, you just have to stay positive and push past it. I know it’s hard, I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to be blind, paralyzed, unable to walk or hold your young child. I’ve lived through many really tough moments in my life. Including physical, mental, and financial struggles.
Besides my own flares, our youngest son almost died and spent a week in the hospital when he was two and a half years old. Years later doctors diagnosed him with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Then he struggled with checking his blood sugar and taking insulin at EVERY meal. For the past five years, he’s been in the hospital four times due to T1D.
You Can Heal
There is no cure for MS and this is not a cure. If you went back to your old habits MS will return. This is a lifestyle change for the better! Stop eating poorly and eating foods that harm your body. Avoiding sugar is more important than a flare. Stop smoking, get your vitamin D checked, learn to manage stress, and avoid toxic people.
Life is tough but you have the power to STAY POSITIVE and BELIEVE you will heal.
