Have you ever looked at the ingredients of your toothpaste? It is full of toxins, it may not seem like much adding that little bit of toothpaste each day but over time those toxic ingredients add up. That’s why making your own natural toothpaste makes so much sense and it’s so easy to make, you probably already have the ingredients in your pantry.
Your mouth is one of the most absorbent places in your body, that’s why doctors have some of your medications and supplements dissolve under your tongue. Even though you spit the toothpaste out, your mouth and gums are allowing these harmful ingredients to enter your bloodstream and every system in your body.
To help your body heal, it’s important to not only remove toxins from your food but also from the products you use like toothpaste. Some of the most popular brands of toothpaste have great marketing campaigns convincing you their product is healthy but it’s not.
Toxic Toothpaste Ingredients
- Artificial Sweeteners are used to improve the taste, Aspartame being the worst. Aspartame does not easily pass through the body it then travels through the blood vessels into sensitive areas, such as the brain. This causes enormous damage to the tissues, including symptoms such as weakness, vertigo, numbness, and dizziness.
- Fluoride is not only in your toothpaste, it’s also in your city’s drinking water and then you’re given even more fluoride at the dentist’s office. Whether or not fluoride is good or not is a controversial argument. Fluoride is known to prevent tooth decay but it is toxic to the neurological and endocrine system. Children are at the most risk of adverse effects because they swallow the toothpaste. Dr. Mercola has a great article about fluoride on his website.
- Propylene Glycol is a mineral oil that’s used in antifreeze, enamels, and paints. Who would want to knowingly ingest that?
- Triclosan is a chemical used in antibacterial soaps. It has been shown to help prevent gingivitis but it’s also an endocrine disruptor which has been linked to cancer.
Baking Soda
As a child, I remember my mother having us kids occasionally brush with pure baking soda to help keep our teeth white. Unfortunately, baking soda is a little abrasive and some people can’t handle it very well. It’s okay to leave the baking soda out when making the toothpaste so it’s not as harsh on your teeth, brush with the baking soda once a week to help keep your teeth white. The baking soda also helps improve detoxification by increasing the alkalinity in your urine.
You can make a half recipe if it’s just for you or if you like to change the flavors often. It’s fun to have different flavors around the holidays, pumpkins for Halloween, and so on. It’s also a good idea for each person to have their own jar so there’s no double dipping. To help suppress the bacteria which contribute to plaque development add a few drops of tea tree oil.
Good Oral Health
Avoid processed foods and refined sugar, they are the main culprits when it comes to tooth decay. Eating a highly nutritional-dense diet of healthy vegetables and fruit is important for good oral health.
Researchers found that sufficient omega-3 fats help prevent gum disease.
If you use coconut oil spit it out in the trash and not down your sink. As the coconut oil cools it will harden up, this will help keep your sink from getting clogged up.
Creating natural toothpaste is easy and helps you avoid unwanted ingredients found in many commercial brands. By brushing and flossing twice a day, you’ll be making your teeth and gums as healthy as possible.
