Living with multiple sclerosis (MS) can be challenging. The unpredictable nature of the disease can make it difficult to plan ahead. Plus, the physical and emotional symptoms can take a toll on your well-being.
That’s why self-care is crucial for people with MS. Self-care can improve your symptoms, reduce stress, and enhance your quality of life.
Believe me, I’ve been there. MS is unpredictable so there will be good days and bad days. I make it a point to stay on the positive side. Yes, there are times I’m feeling down and hate having MS. But it only puts me in a dark place I don’t want to be.
Self-care can mean different things to different people. For some, it may be taking a relaxing bath or spending time with loved ones. For others, it may involve developing new coping strategies. It could also be finding ways to manage chronic pain.
For me, it’s spending time outside on a warm sunny day. I love living in a rural area where there are not a lot of people. Sometimes there’s literally nothing to hear except for the sounds of nature. It’s relaxing and puts my body and soul at ease.
Below are some traditional self-care tips. Plus there are some fresh and unexpected ideas that you may not have considered. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or not, there’s something here for everyone.
Traditional Self-Care Tips
Traditional self-care tips are something you should already be doing. It not only benefits your body it will help you feel better mentally.
Here are some traditional self-care tips:
- Eat healthy. A well-balanced diet can help support overall health and well-being. It can even help manage MS symptoms. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, and choose lean proteins such as chicken and fish. Avoid dairy, gluten, processed, and high-fat foods.
- Exercise. Exercise can help improve strength, balance, and mobility. It also helps with depression and fatigue. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week. I like to use the online gym for MS called OptimalBody Personal Fitness.
- Stay hydrated. Drinking enough water is important for maintaining your health and well-being. It also helps reduce symptoms of MS such as fatigue and constipation. Due to bladder issues, most people with MS become dehydrated. Try drinking lemon water as it contains electrolytes.
- Connect with others. Social support is important for mental and emotional well-being. Consider joining a support group or reaching out to friends and family for support.
- Take breaks and prioritize rest. It’s important to listen to your body and take breaks when needed. Prioritizing rest and relaxation can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being.
- Explore alternative therapies. Alternative therapies such as acupuncture and massage may help. Talk to your healthcare provider to see if your insurance will pay for it.
- Practice stress management techniques. MS is stressful, and chronic stress can exacerbate symptoms. Deep breathing, meditation, and mindfulness can reduce stress and promote well-being.
You can incorporate these tips into your self-care routine. They can help manage symptoms and improve your overall health and well-being.
Think Outside the Box
Sometimes you have to think outside the box and try something different. MS is different for everyone so what works for one person may not work for you. Lately, I’ve gotten into biohacking. Not that I did it on purpose, but one day, I noticed the companies were describing themselves as biohacking. Such as Taopatch, Red Light Therapy, OsteoStrong (for osteoporosis), and BioCharger.
Are they working? Taopatch I noticed a difference immediately. The others will take longer so I don’t currently know. For example, I only get a bone density test every two years.
You can read about my experience with Taopatch here: Taopatch For Multiple Sclerosis Review
Here are some fresh and unexpected self-care ideas you might find helpful:
- Connect with nature. Spending time in nature can have a calming effect on the mind and body. Try going for a walk in a park, sitting by a lake, or gardening to connect with nature and promote relaxation. – This is my favorite.
- Explore art therapy. Engaging in creative activities like art, music, or writing can be therapeutic. Plus, it helps you express your emotions. Art therapy can help you reduce stress, improve mood, and promote self-awareness. You can try pencil, paint, or clay options.
- Join a support group. A support group can help you connect with others who are living with MS and share your experiences. You can find local support groups or online communities. You will be able to talk with others who understand what you’re going through.
- Practice gratitude. Focusing on what you’re grateful for can help you shift your perspective. Plus, it will help you reduce feelings of negativity and stress. Try starting a gratitude journal or taking a few minutes each day to reflect on what you’re thankful for.
- Try aromatherapy. Lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus oils can relax the body and mind. You can use essential oils in a diffuser, add them to your bath, or apply them topically. I like a mixed blend of orange, lemongrass, Ylang Ylang, and geranium called Stress Relief.
- Try mindfulness meditation. Practicing mindfulness meditation can help you with many health-related issues. Such as reducing stress and anxiety, improving sleep quality, and managing chronic pain.
Remember that self-care looks different for everyone. It’s important to find what works best for you.
MS Self-Care Tips
Living with MS can be overwhelming and it’s natural to feel down at times. However, it’s important to remember that MS does not define you or your life. You are more than your diagnosis, and there are still many things you can enjoy and appreciate.
Don’t picture yourself disabled – instead picture yourself running.
It can be hard at times, especially when you’re dealing with a flare. But, focus on the things that bring you joy. Whether it’s spending time with loved ones, pursuing a hobby, or enjoying the beauty of nature. Focusing on the positives can cultivate gratitude and resilience to manage MS challenges.
In conclusion, self-care is a crucial component of managing MS symptoms. You can care for yourself in various ways. Try taking breaks, setting boundaries, practicing gratitude, or using low-cost biohacking techniques. Prioritizing self-care can improve symptom management, reduce stress, and enhance quality of life.
Remember to listen to your body and be kind to yourself along the way.
