How to repair your leaky gut is part 6 and the final of a series, “Is there a cure for multiple sclerosis?”
It is known that Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is caused by chronic inflammation. By removing the chronic inflammation it is possible to get your MS into remission. No two patients are the same, so your triggers are also different. As a result, this makes it a little harder to figure out what exactly caused your MS.
For me, it was an overuse of antibiotics, and a diet of refined sugars and refined carbohydrates. It caused my good bacteria to diminish which created a leaky gut, yeast overgrowth (Candida), small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and eventually MS.
I went on a Candida diet, focused on fixing my gut, started seeing a functional medical provider and taking supplements. I’ve been in remission for years but now my symptoms are reversing! For the first time in over a decade, I was able to enjoy the summer heat without my body shutting down due to heat intolerance.
Possible triggers to MS:
- Poor Diet
- Infections (bacteria, parasites, viruses, and yeast overgrowth)
- Environmental toxins (heavy metals, mold, pesticides, etc.)
- Chronic stress
- Hormones (adrenaline, cortisol, etc.)
Functional Medicine
By figuring out your triggers and removing them, you will be able to get your MS into remission too. Functional Medicine addresses the underlying cause of diseases. Instead of focusing on only the neurological system, they look at the entire body as a whole.
Functional medicine follows the 4 R’s to healing that you can do at home:
- Remove
- Replace
- Reinoculate
- Repair
Remove all sensitivities to any food. Common food sensitivities are gluten, dairy, and legumes. Remove processed foods since they contain additives, trans fats, artificial ingredients, sugar, and more. No more fast food restaurants, boxed meals, or junk food furthermore, always read all labels.
Replace with real food including wild-caught fish, grass-fed meats and organ meats, pastured raised poultry, fruits, and vegetables. Vegetables are now your main course. Make sure you eat lots of vegetables and a huge range of different types. Include dark leafy greens, color, and sulfur.
If possible eat organic produce to avoid pesticides. In addition, reduce your sugar intake including natural sugars like honey and fruit, or carbohydrates. This is especially important if you also have Candida or SIBO because they feed on all sugars.
Reinoculate by adding fermented foods to your diet and probiotic supplements for optimal gut health. Current studies have demonstrated the gut microbiome of people with MS is significantly altered compared to people without MS. There may be a possibility that future treatment strategies of MS may include probiotics.
Repair
A leaky gut allows larger food particles and toxins to enter the bloodstream and blood-brain barrier. This causes an immune reaction leading to autoimmune diseases like MS. Once you have removed the triggers it’s time to repair your gut and add probiotics to your diet.
Here are some steps you can take to help your gut heal:
- Taking smaller bites will reduce the food particles before they enter your gut. This will prevent less damage and more healing.
- Eating a nutrient-dense diet including mostly fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices will provide all the essential vitamins to help the healing process.
- Less stress, stress impacts your gut. I’m sure you’ve noticed when you’re stressed your stomach feels sick.
- Bone broth is extremely beneficial to healing the gut lining and boosting the immune system.
- Digestive enzymes help with the proper digestion of food.
- L-glutamine is an amino acid that helps rejuvenate the gut lining.
Other Health Benefits
Other nutrients that help repair the gut and get MS into remission are Omega 3s, zinc, B vitamins, and vitamins A, C, and E. It’s best to talk with your doctor or functional medical provider for your individual needs. This is when my symptoms began to reverse.
If you are fighting Candida, you will also need to include antifungals. Drink lots of water to remove toxins and herbal teas to help your overburdened liver detox. Tea like white thistle, dandelion, and red clover (don’t drink if you have grass allergies). These teas help your liver however they do take time to get used to the taste, my favorite detox tea is Detox from Yogi.
Get plenty of sleep, at least eight hours each night. Avoid stress as much as possible. Practice deep breathing exercises and meditation. Keep moving by stretching and/or light exercises such as tai chi, yoga, or walking.
Stay Positive
Healing the nervous system is one of the slowest to heal so it’s important not to get discouraged. All in all, keep looking toward your end results and you will get there.
