Toxins are everywhere, it is impossible to avoid them. Even if you live in a remote area miles from your closest neighbors you are still exposed. Toxins are in the food you eat, the water you drink, and the air you breathe.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. It is common in young adults, especially women, which can lead to a lower quality of life. Some experts say MS is an autoimmune disease.
However, a 20-year study found Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the leading cause of MS.
If you would like to learn more about the study read:
Epstein-Barr Virus
EBV is a common virus that most people don’t know they have, 95% of the world population has EBV. If EBV is so common, why is MS rare with less than 1% of the world population? The reason is due to environmental factors.
EBV produces neurotoxins. Neurotoxins kill neurons that send signals to the brain and nervous system. Neurotoxins are in your home and products you use every day.
Sources of neurotoxins:
- Bacteria
- Body care products
- Chemotherapy
- Cosmetics
- Flame retardants
- Gasoline fumes
- Heavy metals such as aluminum, arsenic, lead, and mercury
- Household cleaners
- Medications
- Mold
- Parasites
- Pesticides
- Polluted air
- Viruses
Vitamin D
Exposure to heavy metals, lack of sun exposure (vitamin D), smoking, and organic solvents all have a link. Some areas have higher rates of MS due to environmental factors. Scientists have known for decades that vitamin D plays an important role.
Ensure your vitamin D level is between 60-80 ng/mL. Ask your doctor for a blood test or use an online lab. My insurance won’t pay for me to get tested so I use an online lab. I use Walk-In Lab.

Environmental Toxins
Environmental toxins can easily disrupt your mineral balance. It’s impossible to avoid all toxins, do your best to lower your toxin exposure.
“Exposure to chemicals, heavy metals, and organic solvents are considered to be potential etiologic factors, contributing to the onset of MS in many studies.” – PubMed
Toxins are fat-soluble and stored in fatty tissues such as the brain, glands, and nerves. Toxic overload can lead to:
- Brain fog
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Hormone imbalance
- Pain
“The research is very clear—huge, huge, strong correlations between toxic load and most of your autoimmune diseases.” – Dr. Pizzorno
Chemicals
Pesticides and mothballs have shown higher prevalence rates of MS. Workers in agriculture have a higher risk of MS due to pesticides. Workers in the shoe, leather, and mechanical industries also have a higher risk of MS due to chemicals.
Dr. Terry Wahls, the author of the Wahls Protocol, believes growing up on a farm caused her MS. To avoid pesticides buy organic fruits and vegetables.
Heavy Metals
High levels of heavy metals can accumulate in the kidneys, liver, bones, and brain – this is never good. Some metals are carcinogenic, meaning they can cause cancer. If you have mercury amalgam dental fillings see a holistic dentist to have them removed.
To remove heavy metals from your body consume:
- Cilantro
- Garlic
- Parsley
- Spirulina
- Wild blueberries
Always talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement.
I had a higher level of mercury and I didn’t eat tuna because it was on my food sensitivity list. It turns out, that I was absorbing mercury due to old fluorescent lights from work and my older home.
Did you know the blue contrast (gadolinium) used with MRIs is a heavy metal?
Every time you get an MRI, tell your doctor you don’t what the blue contrast is. It will take the doctor a little longer to decipher the results but it is your body you have the right to deny it.
There should not be heavy metals in your brain!
“A case of multiple sclerosis improvement following removal of heavy metal intoxication.” – National Library of Medicine
Arsenic and lead in soils are other toxic heavy metals associated with an increased risk of MS. – Manganese, and zinc are not considered to be toxic.
Removing Toxins
Environmental toxins are everywhere. Clean up what you put on your body and what’s around your home. You can’t clean up everything but every little bit helps.
Environmental toxins you can avoid:
- Air pollution (use air filters)
- Chlorine and fluoride in your water (use a water filter)
- Most body care products
- Smoking (it is a risk factor for MS)
- Pesticides (buy organic or grow your own)
- Toxic household products (make your own)
Help your body remove toxins by eating a nutrient-dense diet. They help by removing toxic elements from your body. Nutrition is the best way to help detox your body and protect you from toxic buildup in the future.
Other ways to remove toxins:
- Add an air filter to your home
- Avoid plastics
- Avoid pork due to bacterial contamination, food-borne illness, and parasites
- Deep breathing exercises (releases toxins)
- Don’t overcook meats, it causes carcinogens
- Drink filtered water
- Dry brushing
- Eat organic fruit and vegetables
- Eat grass-fed meats (beef, bison, lamb, rabbit, wild game, etc.)
- Eat pasture-raised poultry (not eggs)
- Regular bowel movements
- Stop smoking
- Use clean body care products and household cleaners
- Use non-toxic cookware
Foods That Remove Toxins in the Body
There are many delicious foods you can add to your diet that help remove toxins. Eat a wide range of mostly fruits and vegetables. They are high in antioxidants and fiber plus they help reduce inflammation.
Foods and products that help your body detox:
- Artichoke
- Beetroot
- Bentonite clay, binder for toxins
- Cilantro binds to heavy metals
- Cruciferous vegetables (asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, etc.)
- Dandelion
- Fresh organic fruit
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Green tea
- Lemons
- Milk thistle
- Red clover (avoid if you have grass allergies)
- Turmeric
- Watercress
- Zeolite, a binder for toxins such as heavy metals and mycotoxins
Many hidden triggers could be at the root cause of your MS. You will need to become a detective and discover what is your root cause. Since no two people are alike what caused one person’s MS may not be what caused yours.
Environmental Toxins in the Body
Processed food, non-organic produce, corn, soy, and dairy products are just a few of the foods that cause problems. Dairy is linked with a higher rate of MS and MS exacerbations (flares or attacks).
Your liver helps remove these from your body but when it is overloaded it can’t do its job. Help your liver by eating clean, whole foods and keeping neurotoxins and other viral poisons out. – Toxins in the body cause MS.
