Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease. It affects the central nervous system (CNS). The brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves are part of the CNS. It attacks the myelin sheath that covers nerve fibers in the CNS. This leads to inflammation and damage causing neurological symptoms.
Neurological symptoms can include:
- Bladder and bowel issues
- Difficulty swallowing
- Changes in mood or behavior
- Depression
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Hearing loss or ringing in the ears
- Loss of balance or coordination
- Memory loss or confusion
- Mobility difficulties
- Paralysis or muscle weakness
- Seizures
- Speech difficulties
- Tingling
- Tremors or uncontrolled movements
- Visual changes or blindness
- Weakness and numbness in limbs
It’s believed the immune system attacks the protective covering (myelin) of nerve fibers. Affecting the brain and spinal cord, leading to inflammation and damage.
This is wrong.
The immune system is not attacking itself, it’s attacking pathogens within the body. The exact cause of MS is a combination of genetic, environmental, and immune factors.
Factors that may play a role in developing MS:
- Genetics: MS tends to run in families. Suggesting that genetic factors may make some people more susceptible to the disease.
- Environmental factors: Exposure to certain viruses, such as the Epstein-Barr virus. Environmental toxins trigger the development of MS in people who are genetically susceptible.
- Vitamin D deficiency: Low levels of vitamin D increases the risk of developing MS.
- Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of developing MS. Smoking also causes a more rapid progression of the disease.
These factors may interact with each other and with other unknown factors to cause MS.
Epstein-Barr Virus
In 2022, a 20-year study released stated Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the main cause of MS. However, 95% of all adults have EBV and only a small percentage have MS. This proves EBV is not the only factor.
To Learn More About The Study Read:
It could be another infection or exposure to certain environmental toxins. It could also be a combination of these and other factors. This is when you need to look into your history and try and figure out what it could be.
Besides EBV I also have the chicken pox virus and the bacteria streptococcus, also known as strep. When I was a child I would get many sore throats and strep throat.
Some types of streptococci bacteria can survive in a dormant or latent state. It usually stays in the body without causing symptoms. This can occur after an initial infection has healed and resolved on its own.
Viruses and bacteria can remain in the body for a long period of time and then reactivate later. Such as the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which is part of the herpes virus. Chickenpox (varicella) commonly seen in children goes dormant after the initial illness. Then years or decades later show up again as shingles (zoster).
Best Diet for MS
What is the best diet for MS? There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. The best diet for overall health varies based on individual factors. Such as age, gender, weight, and activity level.
A balanced diet including a variety of nutrient-dense is generally recommended. This includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats.
It is also important to limit the intake of salt and saturated fats. And avoid dairy, gluten, processed foods, refined sugar, and carbohydrates. Consuming a variety of real foods can help manage MS and promote health.
Why a Detox Can Help Your Body
Detox is the process of removing toxic or harmful substances from the body. Typically through a specific diet or lifestyle change. It’s used for removing toxins from the body through dietary changes and supplements.
The body has its own natural systems for removing toxins. They work together to remove waste products and toxins from the body. Either by breaking them down for elimination or excreting them directly.
The body’s primary organs involved in the detoxification process include:
- Gastrointestinal tract
- Kidneys
- Liver
- Lungs
- Skin
Foods that can help remove toxins from the body include:
- Leafy greens. Leafy greens are high in antioxidants and help with detoxification.
- Citrus fruits. Oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits contain high levels of vitamin C. This helps the liver in removing toxins.
- Cruciferous vegetables. Broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower contain sulfur compounds that support liver function. They also assist in the removal of toxins.
- Garlic. Garlic has sulfur compounds and can help with liver detoxification.
- Avocados. Avocados are high in healthy fats, fiber, and potassium, which help to flush out toxins. However, it is best to consume fats in moderation.
- Ginger. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and can aid in digestion and removing toxins.
- Water. Staying hydrated is important for flushing out toxins. The body flushes out toxins through urine and sweat.
Note: It is important to keep in mind that a well-balanced diet, regular exercise, and good sleep are all important for overall health and reducing the load of toxins in the body.
How to Detox
Detoxing is a process or regimen aimed at eliminating toxins from the body. Typically by changing one’s diet and lifestyle. Some people use the term “detox” to refer specifically to diets. It promises to remove toxins, flush out impurities, and improve health and well-being. Detoxing supports the body’s natural systems for eliminating waste and promoting health.
Detoxing from EBV cannot be detoxed from the body in the traditional sense. To recover from EBV, the body’s immune system must fight the virus.
To support the immune system in detoxing and fighting a virus, it’s recommended to:
- Hydrate. Drinking plenty of water keeps your body hydrated. Plus, it helps flush out toxins and pathogens.
- Eat a balanced diet. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and herbs can help provide the nutrients your body needs to naturally remove toxins.
- Avoid processed and high-fat foods. Processed foods and high-fat diets can strain the liver and other organs. It slows their healing power which plays a role in detoxification.
- Get enough sleep. Sleep is important for the body’s natural detoxification processes. Resting allows the body to conserve energy used to fight pathogens.
- Exercise. Regular physical activity can boost circulation, build strength, and keep you mobile. Plus, it helps move toxins out of the body.
- Manage stress. Chronic stress can weaken the immune system and impact the body’s ability to detoxify.
- Supplements. Certain supplements can help support the body’s natural detoxification processes.
- Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. These substances can weaken the immune system and slow down recovery.
- Reduce exposure to environmental toxins. Such as industrial waste, pollution, pesticides, heavy metals, and household products. Exposure to these toxins can lead to negative health effects.
Detox Secrets to Transform Your Body
Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Including a balanced diet, regular exercise, getting enough sleep, and adequate hydration. This is generally the best way to support the body’s natural detoxification processes.
If you decide to try a detox start slow to avoid the symptoms of detoxing. Help your liver detox by drinking more filtered water, lowering fats, and eating more fruits and vegetables.
For an excellent “28-Day Healing Cleanse” check out the book Medical Medium Revised and Expanded Edition. It includes a four-week sample menu plan and recipes with vibrant full-color photos.
For a safe liver cleanse try the 3:6:9 cleanse in the book Medical Medium Cleanse to Heal. There are three different cleanses to choose from. The 3:6:9 Original, the 3:6:9 Simplified, and the 3:6:9 Advanced.
Again, you want to go slowly to avoid detox symptoms. Start by eating a clean diet with lots of vegetables and fruit. According to Anthony William, aka Medical Medium, if you go too fast with detoxing your immune system will crash.
