Your liver acts as a filter, it removes impurities and toxins. Think of it as an oil filter in your car. The oil filter removes the impurity that would otherwise run amok and destroy your car’s engine.
We can change the oil filter in our car but we can’t change our liver so we need to take care of it. Our lifestyle habits such as eating a poor diet or having a sedentary lifestyle can impact vital organs such as the liver.
The liver’s job is to:
- Break down damaged or old blood cells
- Control the amount of sugar kept in the bloodstream
- Filter the blood before passing it onto the rest of the body
- Keep the body healthy
- Regulate proteins
- Pushes toxins out of the body
- Store fat
- Store fat-soluble vitamins and minerals then release them when needed
As you can see the liver plays an important role in keeping your body healthy. It keeps you full of energy, nourished, and toxic-free. An overworked liver can leave you feeling tired and weak.
A damaged liver can affect several other organs such as the heart, kidneys, and lungs. Eating natural foods and a well-balanced diet will help keep your liver healthy. But, when there’s chronic inflammation your liver has a hard time working properly.
Green Tea
According to the U.S. Library of Medicine, an increase in green tea may reduce the risk of diseases. Including liver disease, breast cancer, and heart disease. Green tea is an antioxidant that protects us against the cold and flu.
Green tea supports brain health by improving cognitive performance, memory, and mood. It also reduces markers of oxidative damage. Evidence of green tea has a biological effect on neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegenerative diseases include Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease.
Matcha green tea is a finely grounded powder from shaded green tea leaves. The shaded leaves produce more antioxidants and caffeine than regular green tea. Studies found matcha green tea may protect the liver. Besides drinking matcha green tea in a cup of hot water, I like to add it to my smoothies. You can even drink hot or cold matcha green tea latte.
Matcha green tea latte (hot or cold):
- 1 teaspoon matcha green tea powder
- 3 tablespoons warm water and mix with powder until smooth
- Add hot or warm milk (almond, cashew, coconut, hemp)
My favorite green tea is Choice Organic Green Tea and my favorite matcha green tea is Jade Leaf Matcha Green Tea Powder.
Note: taking a high dose of green tea, usually in a supplement form has the opposite effect. Although green tea and matcha green tea is very beneficial, high levels can damage your liver.
Milk Thistle
Milk thistle is an excellent antioxidant for your liver. It helps to strengthen your liver by reducing free radical damage. It also for slowing down oxidative stress. Milk thistle helps to reduce inflammation and promote cell growth.
Milk thistle is used as a treatment for various liver diseases. It also reduces cholesterol, helps with insulin resistants, and supports bone health. And, it’s great for skin damage such as fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.
People have used milk thistle for thousands of years for many health issues. Including liver damage. It’s also used for neurological conditions like MS and Parkinson’s disease. It’s not the best-tasting tea, but with all these benefits it’s worth it. I use this brand is Buddha Teas Organic Milk Thistle Tea.
Dandelion Root
Most people considered dandelions to be a weed. But, dandelions have many health benefits. They are excellent at cleaning our liver. It aids in the detoxification of our liver and kidneys. Dandelion tea helps with our digestive system. And it helps to strengthen your immune system. It also has cancer-fighting antioxidants. There are two different kinds of dandelion teas, roasted or raw.
In my opinion, the roasted tastes better but the raw dandelion tea has more nutrients. If you have a yard full of dandelions you could pick them from yourself. Make sure that your lawn isn’t sprayed with chemicals.
I like drinking Dandelion Root Tea Detox Tea and Traditional Medicinals Tea, Organic Dandelion Leaf and Root Tea.
Dandelion tea:
- Wash roots thoroughly
- Chop into fine pieces
- Bake at 250° F for about two hours (flip after one hour)
- After baking and cooling, you could grind them in a coffee grinder to make them even finer
- Steep 1-2 teaspoons in hot water (not boiling) for about 10 minutes (depending on how strong you want it)
- Honey (optional)
Drinking large amounts of dandelion tea is safe. But if you have grass allergies it may cause an allergic reaction.

Ginger is an antioxidant, reduces inflammation, and protects us from fatty liver disease. Ginger’s used for arthritis, colds, high blood pressure, migraines, nausea, and pain. It also helps protect us from the negative effects of heavy metals. In a small study ginger improved memory improvement.
