Chronic inflammation is the destruction of the body’s cells leading to disease. It’s the liver’s job to remove toxins and keep the body healthy. Unfortunately, the liver becomes overwhelmed and unable to detox. Here are 3 herbal teas to detox your liver and give it some much-needed support.
The liver is one of the largest organs in the body. It has many jobs including:
- Converting nutrients that our bodies can use.
- Altering and removing toxins from the body.
- Stores vitamins and minerals, then release them when needed.
- Helping to keep blood sugar levels in check.
As you can see, the liver plays an important role in keeping the body healthy. It keeps you nourished, full of energy, and toxic-free. An overworked liver leaves you feeling tired and weak.
Did you know? Babies are born with almost 300 hundred different chemicals in their system!
In 2005 the Environmental Working Group (EWG) discovered 287 chemicals in the umbilical cord blood of 10 babies. These toxins included the Teflon chemical PFOA, flame retardants, pesticides, and more. 217 of those chemicals are toxic to the brain and nervous system.
Why should I detox?
Today, our diets and lifestyle put a huge burden on our liver and it has a hard time keeping up. From junk food, sugary drinks, and alcohol, to the pollution in the air. Even our own homes contain pollution, and possibly the most damaging is stress.
You can’t avoid all these damaging toxins. However, the toxins from your overwhelmed liver need to go somewhere. Unfortunately, they move into other organs. This includes the brain and central nervous system!
Too many toxins lead to chronic inflammation, autoimmune disease, and permanent liver damage. Chronic inflammation causes too many free radicals which damage cells. In other words, it’s damaging the healthy tissue in your body.
Keep It Clean
Your liver is your body’s filter, like your filter to your furnace, you need to keep it clean. The good news is we can limit and remove some of these toxins. By cleaning up our diets and avoiding chemicals.
Liver-supporting food and herbs can help your body detox and lower its toxic overload. That’s why I like to drink herbal teas to help rid toxins that have built up over time. It will also benefit other organs, such as the brain and nervous system.
Herbal Teas
Herbal teas have been around for thousands of years. Researchers discovered certain teas may even prevent some cancers, diabetes, and heart disease. Herbal teas have many benefits. Including a restful night’s sleep to fight off colds.
Unfortunately, there are so many teas it’s hard to know which ones are best. I like to stick with well-known organic brands, this way I know I’m buying a good quality tea. While detoxing it’s a good idea to rotate your teas. Read the labels some teas say to take a break after a certain amount of time when drinking it every day.
Milk Thistle
Milk Thistle tea is excellent for your liver. It’s anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant which helps detox the liver. It fights free radical damage and slows oxidative stress. It not only benefits the liver but it can even reverse damage to the liver.
Milk thistle is sometimes used as a therapeutic treatment for various liver diseases. And, it’s great for skin damage such as fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.
It’s not the best-tasting tea, but with all these benefits it’s worth it. My favorite brand is Organic Milk Thistle by Alvita.
Dandelion Tea
Most people see dandelions as a weed but they have many health benefits. Dandelions are excellent at cleansing our liver. They also help with our digestive system and strengthen the immune system. It aids in the detoxification of our liver and kidneys. It also has cancer-fighting antioxidants. There are two different kinds of dandelion tea, roasted or raw.
Raw is the better choice to maximize the benefits. Unfortunately, the taste isn’t that great, it’s a little bitter. My favorite raw dandelion tea is Organic Dandelion Root Tea by KissMe Organics, it includes hibiscus and cinnamon which helps it taste better.
Roasted dandelion tea tastes much better with its robust flavor. With its milder bitter taste, it’s often used as a coffee substitute. Some brands add extra seasonings, like cinnamon and ginger, to make it a little sweeter.
If you’ve never tried the dandelion tea before you may want to start with roasted dandelion first. My favorite brand has a little bit of a spicy flavor, it’s Roasted Dandelion Spice DeTox by Yogi.
Detox
My favorite detox tea is actually called Detox, it’s Detox by Yogi. This tea has a nice aroma and includes an inspirational message on every tea bag. The taste is pretty good, it includes Indian sarsaparilla to add a spicy flavor.
This tea uses nineteen different herbs. Including burdock and dandelion root to support the liver. Juniper berries help promote kidney function. It also includes ginger, black pepper, and long pepper to stimulate blood flow.

Important Notes
- If you spray your yard with pesticides, don’t pick the dandelions and use them in your tea.
- If you suffer from grass allergies you may want to avoid herbal teas.
- Herbal teas may interact with certain medications, talk to your doctor first.
Will the tea make me pee a lot?
I know this will be difficult for some, especially if you’re suffering from bladder issues. Tea has a diuretic compound which increases your need to urinate more often. If this is the case for you, avoid drinking herbal teas in the evening to avoid having to get up after bedtime.
Dandelion tea is a natural diuretic used for bladder problems. Diuretics help with inflammation, and menstrual cramps, and are used as a mild laxative. Make sure you’re not drinking teas with caffeine, this will also increase your need to urinate.
Your Liver Will Love You
Our overburdened body includes too many toxins. Drinking herbal teas will help the liver to speed up your recovery time. Drinking one cup once in a while isn’t enough, it’s like pouring a cup of water on a forest fire. You need to drink a lot of herbal teas to put out the fire.
Your liver and body will love you for it.
