The first step of your healing path is to stop eating foods that cause inflammation. Such as gluten, dairy, and refined sugar. Instead, eat a nutrient-dense diet that includes a wide variety of vegetables. Next, heal your infections with herbs.
Our ancestors used herbs for many health issues. Such as treating infections, digestive issues, headaches, insomnia, and even broken bones. Herbs can treat many ailments affecting the body. The nice thing about herbs is they are just as effective as pharmaceutical drugs yet safer for the liver. Plus, they fight against bacteria, parasites, viruses, and yeast. Which are all often associated with multiple sclerosis (MS).
Possible infections:
- Bacterial infections
- Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)
- Heavy metal toxicity
- Herpes simplex type 1 and 2
- Lyme disease
- Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
- Yeast overgrowth (Candida)
Which herbal protocol is best?
There are many different herbal protocols to choose from. Since I was dealing with candida (a fungus) I ate a low-sugar/carbohydrate diet and used antifungal herbs. They are not only easier on your liver but they help as you’re healing your gut. Plus, many pharmaceutical drugs are unsafe if taken for long periods. Where herbs can be safely taken for years.
Herbs are very powerful. They attack stealth infections that hide inside cells, organs, or tissue. Stealth infections are bacterial or viruses. They can lay dormant for years or spread quickly. It may start as a headache or fatigue but develop into insomnia or joint pain.
Conventional doctors use antibiotics to kill the bacteria. But, stealth pathogens form a protective biofilm resistant to antibacterials and immune response. if you’ve had one of these stealth infections for years it’s attacked many systems in your body. Including your gut flora of good bacteria.
Stealth infections that can lead to:
- Adenovirus – bronchitis, pneumonia, or the common cold
- Borrelia Burgdorferi – Lyme disease
- Candida albicans – candida
- Epstein-Barr virus – mononucleosis
- Helicobacter – abdominal pain, black or bloody stools, nausea, and peptic ulcers
- Mycoplasma – walking pneumonia
- Streptococcus – strep
Herbal Protocols:
Ann Boroch
Ann Boroch’s book Healing Multiple Sclerosis is my favorite herbal protocol. She mainly focuses on fungus/yeast and it’s byproducts. But her protocol also addresses other factors. Such as gut health, heavy metals, mold, and parasites.
Ann Boroch’s protocol herbs include:
- Berberine
- Black walnut
- Caprylic acid
- Citrus seed extract
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Marshmallow root
- Olive leaf
- Oregano oil
- Oregon grape root
- Pau d’arco
- Red clover
- Thyme oil
Stephen Buhner
Stephen is an award-winning author of many books and an authority on Lyme disease. He has two books, Healing Lyme and Healing Lyme Disease Coinfections. His protocol also protects the nervous system and inhibits autoimmune processes.
Stephen Buhner’s protocol herbs include:
- Andrographis
- Cat’s claw
- Japanese knotweed
He has other herbs that help with chronic fatigue, joint pain, or neurological issues. Check out his books which you can find online or ask your local library.
Dr. Bill Rawls
You can also look into Dr. Bill Rawls. Dr. Rawls was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia and later Lyme disease. After conventional medicine failed him he looked into herbal medicine. Inspired by Stephen Buhner, he came up with his own protocol. Check out his books Suffered Long Enough and Unlocking Lyme.
Dr. Hulda Clark
The late Dr. Clark was the author of several books and specialized in parasite cleansing. Her protocol includes three different herbs. These herbs kill parasites during each stage of their life. You can find her book online – The Cure for All Diseases.
Dr. Hulda Clark protocol herbs include:
- Black walnut hills
- Cloves
- Wormwood
Mycotoxins
Later I discovered I also had an extremely high level of mycotoxins (mold). Mycotoxins are a toxic compound found in certain types of fungi like mold. They grow on food, and water-damaged buildings, and they are a byproduct of candida.
I had to alter my diet – again. This time not only eating low carb but eating a low mold diet too. I also included binders to help detox from the mycotoxins. About one-quarter of the population has the HLA-DR gene. This makes them more sensitive to mold.
Having the HLA-DR gene makes it harder to recover from mycotoxins and other toxins.
Binders help your body reduce its toxic overload. They “bind” themselves to the toxins as you detox. Without binders, toxins get reabsorbed back in and recirculated by your liver.
Binders also help to break down biofilms that cause an imbalance of gut bacteria. It allows the bad bacteria in your gut to outnumber the good bacteria, called dysbiosis. Biofilms help hide harmful pathogens such as heavy metals, Lyme disease, and mycotoxins.
A study showed that mycotoxins are present in sweat. This means sweating is a method of detoxing to reduce mycotoxins in the body. Exercise and using a sauna is a good way to detox – as long as you do not have heat intolerance.
Heat intolerance can cause a temporary worsening of MS symptoms.
Following a Protocol
Everyone is different so every path will be different. I started eating real foods in 2004 but my symptoms didn’t start to reverse until I started listening to my body. I followed The Wahls Protocol because I thought it was the most nutrient-dense diet. But I tweaked it and added herbs to fit my needs.
Once I combined different protocols I started to see my symptoms reverse. Candida is a fungal infection caused by yeast. And mycotoxins are a toxin produced by a fungus (mold), I needed to follow a protocol to reduce fungus.
According to PubMed –
“…herbal medicines could be effective in the treatment of MS disease and itsʼ related symptoms, by reducing the demyelination, improving remyelination and suppressing the inflammation in the CNS (central nervous system).”

My favorite herbs/supplements to reduce my fungus overload are:
- Berberine (lowers blood sugar)
- Cinnamon (lowers blood sugar)
- Dandelion
- Flaxseeds, ground
- Formula SF722
- Garlic
- Green tea
- Milk thistle
- Omega-3
- Pau d’arco
- Vitamins C, D, and E
- Zeolite
Having MS there’s a really good chance you have an overgrowth of some kind of pathogen in your gut. Conventional drugs almost never treat the underlying condition that is causing the symptoms. Making it very profitable for pharmaceutical companies.
Herbal medicines are safe and effective.
NOTE: Before beginning any herbal protocol you should speak to your doctor first. Especially if you are on any medications since herbs can alter their effectiveness.
