Heat intolerance is a symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). The myelin sheath protects the nerves. But when it becomes damaged the nerves become more sensitive to heat. Whether it’s from the weather, exercising, or a fever it happens when the body’s core temperature rises.
Before MRIs, doctors used to diagnose people with MS by taking a hot bath. Hot water raises a person’s body core temperature causing temporary neurological damage. As the person’s body core temperature cools their symptoms would also disappear.
Unfortunately, I suffered from heat intolerance for about twenty years. I would first feel my face getting really hot then I would start getting weak and my eyes would blackout. It got so bad I wouldn’t be able to walk.
Symptoms from heat intolerance:
- Dizziness
- Eyes blackout or blurry
- Extreme weakness
- Face flushed
- Fatigue
- Moodiness
- Rapid breathing
- Skin warm to the touch
I didn’t sweat and often wondered if that had something to do with my heat intolerance. It would take hours for my body to cool down and my symptoms to disappear. Every summer I would spend most of my time inside an air-conditioned room. – Thank goodness for air conditioning.
Heat Intolerance Gone!
Several years ago my heat intolerance disappeared. It was hard to believe and I tested it over and over again. I even rode in a car without air conditioning on a 100° F day for thirty minutes. I was hot not from heat intolerance but because it was hot in the car.
My heat intolerance didn’t disappear for some unknown reason. It disappeared because I started following a Candida diet. Candida is a yeast overgrowth, it’s usually kept under control in the body. But, when the good bacteria dies off it allows candida to grow out of control.
What is Candida?
Candida albicans is the most common type of yeast infection. If it’s allowed to grow it can spread throughout the entire body. Candida infections can cause many different health issues.
Causes of Candida:
- Antibiotics
- Chronic stress
- Diet high in refined sugar and carbohydrates
- High alcohol intake
- Oral contraceptives
- Steroids (cortisone, prednisone, etc.)
Candida digs its roots into the intestinal lining creating a leaky gut. These openings in the gut lining allow the yeast and its by-products to enter the bloodstream. Mycotoxins are toxins produced by mold spores and they are a byproduct of Candida.
Candida albicans overgrowth and its by-products (mycotoxins) are the primary cause of MS. – Ann Boroch
Symptoms of Candida:
- Allergies
- Athletes foot
- Brain fog
- Dandruff
- Digestive problems
- Jock itch
- Nail fungus
- Oral thrush
- Ringworm
- Sinus infections
- Sugar cravings
- Urinary tract infections (UTI)
- Vaginal yeast infections
Candida Diet
Candida feeds on sugar, I not only had to lower my carbohydrate intake but I had to get my stress under control. Stress raises your blood sugar which also feeds candida. Candida doesn’t care where the sugar is coming from as long as it is fed.
I was already following a paleo-based diet so it wasn’t a big change for me. You will need to avoid foods that are high in sugar. Including gluten, dairy, and foods that promote inflammation.
Other foods to avoid:
- Alcohol
- Bacon (parasites)
- Caffeinated drinks (except green tea)
- Condiments (sugar)
- Foods high in mycotoxins (black peppercorn, cashews, pistachios, etc.)
- Refined oils
- Tuna (mercury)
- Vinegar
Healing Multiple Sclerosis
Once I realized I also had candida I altered my diet to stop feeding my yeast overgrowth. I read the book Healing Multiple Sclerosis by Ann Boroch. In addition, I bought the supplements recommended in the book. The book not only deals with yeast overgrowth but bacteria, viruses, and parasites. These are many of the triggers that cause the onset of MS.
Possible triggers to MS:
- Diet (processed foods, refined sugar, refined carbs, food allergies, etc.)
- Infections (bacterial overgrowth, parasites, viruses, and yeast overgrowth )
- Environmental Toxins (heavy metals, mold, pesticides, plastics, etc.)
- Chronic Stress (especially emotional stress)
- Hormones (vitamin D, insulin, cortisol)
- Genetics (you can’t change your genes but you can change your gene expression by living a healthy lifestyle)
I fell into every category from the list above.
Several viruses and bacteria show up more consistently than others in the blood work of those with MS. They are borrelia burgdorferi, which is the agent responsible for Lyme disease and is transmitted through tick bites; human herpes virus 6 (HHV-6), which commonly causes roseola in infants; chlamydia pneumonia, commonly involved in respiratory infections; cytomegalovirus (CMV); and Epstein-Barr virus, which can bring on mononucleosis. – Ann Boroch
When yeast overgrowth is present and the fungus and its by-products move through your system, your body is depleted of oxygen. This imbalanced ecology creates a perfect breeding ground for bacterial, viral, and parasitical infections. – Ann Boroch
Antifungals
Getting candida back under control is hard and it’s going to take more than diet alone. Antifungals are the perfect solution. Nystatin and Diflucan are prescription medications but they are harsher on the liver than herbs. Plus, your doctor may not be willing to prescribe these to you.
Herbal antifungals are safer and easier to buy. Plus, they help get rid of bacteria, parasites, and viruses, all of which are possibly involved in MS. There are many antifungals including:
- Berberine
- Black walnut
- Caprylic acid
- Garlic
- Ginger
- Olive leaf
- Oregano oil
- Pau d’arco
Go slowly when you first start taking antifungals. If you take too many too soon it will cause die-off symptoms (or Herxheimer reaction). When these cells die they release toxins including acetaldehyde (a neurotoxin). – This can kill brain cells.
Die-off symptoms vary for each person. Start slow and help your liver with supplements or tea such as milk thistle. The liver is one of the main organs for removing toxins. If you get die-off symptoms, your liver is probably too overwhelmed.

Die-off symptoms:
- Bloating
- Chills
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Headache
- Joint pain
- Nausea
- Skin issues (acne, hives, rashes, etc.)
- Swollen glands
Two months after starting the Candida diet I visited a functional medicine doctor. He recommended supplements that were very similar to what Ann Boroch recommended. But he also recommended Formula SF722 for gut flora support and yeast overgrowth.
By the end of my third month, I noticed my heat intolerance was gone.

Four years ago I noticed that my feet felt like a tinglung/semi-prickly sensation, similar to an extremity falling asleep. Then progressively going up my legs, progressing to my arms….Trouble with lack of sleep/brain fog.
Noticing in particular that during the summer season, virtually symptom free.
What is your take on this?
I’m vegan – not hard-core. If I eat grain, it’s always nongluten. Green smoothies 3x’s a wk, and, berrie smoothies 3 x’s a wk. Rverything consume is Organic….
Please share your feedback.

Hi Trish,
Have you been diagnosed with MS? Although these are all signs of MS, it could be something else too. It sounds like you’re working hard at eating right. It may be a good idea to see your doctor or a functional medicine doctor (FMD).
I highly recommend an FMD, they will get to the root of your health issues. To find an FMD in your area check >>> ifm(dot)org/find-a-practitioner/
