Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease. It’s also known as a neurodegenerative disease and a demyelination disease. No matter what it’s considered MS is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. By helping your body detox it is possible to stop the progression of MS.
Some kind of inflammation triggered your MS. Whether it was your diet, lifestyle habits, or some kind of environmental factor. Smoking, lack of vitamin D, viruses such as Epstein-Barr virus, and increases a person’s risk for MS.
Since everyone is different everyone’s trigger will be different. Which means everyone’s solution will be different. You will need to look into your history to find your triggers. Even if you’ve been living with MS for many years your body can still repair itself.
Possible triggers to MS:
- Diet (processed foods, refined sugar, refined carbs, food allergies, etc.)
- Infections (bacterial overgrowth, parasites, viruses, and yeast overgrowth )
- Environmental Toxins (heavy metals, mold, pesticides, plastics, etc.)
- Chronic Stress (especially emotional stress)
- Hormones (vitamin D, insulin, cortisol)
- Genetics (you can’t change your genes but you can change your gene expression by living a healthy lifestyle)
I suffered from heat intolerance for about twenty years. Once I adjusted my diet and added supplements to fit my body’s needs my heat intolerance disappeared. It’s been several years now and every summer I am still amazed that I can stay outdoors on hot days.
It turns out I had a severe yeast overgrowth called Candida. Once I started detoxing my body from Candida my symptoms started to reverse. I didn’t go on some quick juice detox or colon cleansing detox. Instead, I focused on my detoxification and took steps to help push the toxins out. Besides our two major detox organs, the liver and kidneys, there are other organs that help to detox.
5 organs that detox your body:
- Liver
- Kidney
- Skin
- Digestive system
- Lungs
Avoid Every Day Toxins
We’re exposed to thousands of toxic chemicals every day. From the food we eat, the air we breathe, to stuff we put on our bodies. It’s impossible to remove all of them but the more you can reduce the less your body has to deal with.
Start by eating natural, real foods. Including vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, healthy fats and oils, and grass-fed meats. Then use natural body care products and natural household cleaners. Now let’s look at what you can do to help detox your organs as a lifestyle habit and not as a one-time cleanser.
1 – Liver
Usually, when people think of a detoxing organ they think of the liver. And for good reason. The liver’s job is to produce a digestive juice known as bile. It filters wastes from the blood then passes through to the small intestines to help digest fats.
The liver stores fat-soluble vitamins A, B12, D, E, and K until your body needs them. It stores glucose which is an important source of energy. The liver also produces enzymes to help break down food. When the liver becomes overwhelmed with toxins it has a hard time keeping up. But you can help your liver by eating foods that help to remove toxins from your body.
Foods to help your liver:
- Avocados
- Beets
- Carrots
- Citrus fruits
- Garlic
- Green tea
- Leafy green vegetables
- Sulfur vegetables
- Turmeric
2 – Kidneys
Your body has two kidneys located on each side of your spine just below the ribs. The kidney’s job is to remove excess fluid and waste products from your body through urine. They also release hormones to regulate blood pressure.
Unfortunately, as toxins build up and increase they can damage the kidneys. Once the kidneys begin to fail it can lead to more serious problems and more waste in the bloodstream.
Foods to eat for kidney health:
- Blueberries
- Cranberries
- Garlic
- Olive oil
- Onions
- Red bell peppers
- Salmon, wild-caught
- Strawberries
- Sulfur vegetables
3 – Skin
Our skin is our largest organ. It protects us from temperature changes, damaging sunlight, and harmful chemicals. It can also be the first sign of inflammation. Such as redness, warmth from a fever, rash, or acne.
Every day your skin sheds thousands of dead skin cells. It also works with your nervous system letting you know when something is hot. Plus, it is full of blood vessels to carry nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. The best way to help your body detox is by eating a nutrient-dense diet, exercise, and sweating. Although, for many people with MS it’s harder to sweat through exercise. Plus, some people with MS may not sweat at all.
I used to not sweat even on the hottest days. I’m not sure exactly why. But it could be from damage to the nervous system that regulates body temperature. When I started following The Wahls Protocol I started to sweat again.
Ways to help your skin detox:
- Drink plenty of water
- Dry brush your skin
- Eat a nutrient-dense diet
- Exercise
- Infrared sauna
4 – Digestive System
The digestive system can harbor bacterial and yeast overgrowth and parasites. These can lead to a leaky gut allowing toxins to pass the gut lining causing havoc throughout the body. It’s not only important to eat a nutrient-dense diet it’s also important to focus on foods that heal your gut. Researchers discovered people with MS have more bad gut bacteria than healthy people.

Gluten is a protein that’s linked with many health issues including autoimmune diseases. It contributes to a leaky gut causing digestive issues and food sensitivities. Gluten is in many grains such as wheat, barley, and rye.
According to PubMed:
Gluten affects the microbiome and increases intestinal permeability. It boosts oxidative stress and affects epigenetic behavior. It is also immunogenic, cytotoxic, and proinflammatory. Gluten intake increases apoptosis and decreases cell viability and differentiation. In certain nonceliac autoimmune diseases, gluten-free diets may help curtail the adverse effects of gluten.
5 – Lungs
Every time you take a breath your lungs pull in oxygen which sends blood to the heart. The heart then sends the blood and oxygen throughout the cells of your organs and tissues. As your cells use oxygen they produce carbon dioxide.
Your blood then carries the carbon dioxide back to your lungs and leaves your body as you exhale. Depending on where you live. The air you breathe could be very polluted and with every breath, you’re pulling in these toxins. Take several slow and deep breaths throughout the day to help remove toxins from your body.
There’s not much you can do about the outside air without moving to a new area. But, you can clean up the air inside your home by using a good quality air filter. If you have allergies you should purchase a HEPA filter but they don’t remove mycotoxins (mold).
Mycotoxins are microscopic and can slip through HEPA filters. Buying an air filter to remove mycotoxins is expensive but if you’re sensitive to mold this is your best option.
Here are some filters that remove mycotoxins:
